In order to prevent latex from coagulating, alkalines such as ammonia can be added, and thereafter work as a kind of preservative. The hydroxide ions from the alkaline additive neutralize the acidic hydrogen ions that are produced in the latex because of a bacterial infestation that feeds on the protein content of the latex.

Two variants of latex are available:

  • FA Latex (high ammonia content)
  • LA Latex (low ammonia content)

With regard to natural rubber (NR) variants, the product range comprises three main areas:

  1. Technically Specified Rubber (TSR) is primarily used in the manufacture of tires.

TSR is produced using NR latex. TSR has high tackiness, is easy to mix, and has low viscosity. Its processing properties are excellent, as are its physical properties.

TSR is classified based on its purity. Wallace plasticity and PRI (Plasticity Retention Index) are also important classification parameters. The most commonly used variants are those that have been classified TSR 10 and TSR 20.

  1. Ribbed Smoked Sheet (RSS) rubber are smoked NR sheets which have been processed from Unsmoked Sheets (USS).

RSS rubber is used in rubber blends as a raw material in the manufacture of many different products, e.g. car tires, conveyer belts, rubber hoses, shoes, and car components.

  1. Pale Crepe rubber is coagulated latex that has been rolled out into crinkly ‘sheets’. It is often used to produce shoe soles and boots, as well as for further-processed rubber products.
